Cablevision also talking about using LightSquared 4G

updated 05:45 am EDT, Tue March 29, 2011

Cricket and Sprint also interested in LightSquared

Cablevision has reportedly joined a number of providers of mobile phone and other service providers mulling the use of the LightSquared 4G backend service. Cablevision is looking to augment the delivery of its Internet, television and telephone services with wireless delivery. According to Bloomberg, the discussions are said to be private and spokespersons for both companies have declined to comment on the matter.

The LightSquared 4G service is a satellite-broadband start-up currently under construction that is planning on repurposing its satellite spectrum for terrestrial LTE (4G) use. While it does not currently plan on selling its wireless services directly to consumers, it will be competing with AT&T, Verizon and Clearwire who also sell their wireless spectrum and bandwidth to smaller providers at wholesale prices.

Others to have either signed up to use LightSquared's service or are considering using it include Cricket and Sprint.
