Rumor: MobileMe media locker $20 a year, Warner onboard

updated 07:15 am EDT, Mon March 28, 2011

MobileMe media locker may cost 20 a month

An industry publication claimed in a previously unmentioned rumor this past week that Apple had been making progress on its rumored MobileMe media locker. The service purportedly wouldn't be free but would drop to $20 per year. The Music Void's "informed sources" said Apple had already landed a deal with Warner to let users store music from the label online, and both EMI and Universal were likely to cede relatively quickly.

Sony had declared "sensou" (war) on Apple and might be deliberately stubborn, but it wasn't likely to last for long given how much it depended on iTunes for revenue, according to the tips.

If accurate, the claims would have Apple pressing for an April launch, consistent with earlier rumors. Apple hasn't confirmed its exact intentions but has acknowledged that it was planning to use its new datacenter for MobileMe and iTunes.

The publication has an unknown track record for Apple rumors, and it's notable that the pricing would contradict most rumors that MobileMe would become a free service. Apple itself has been leaving only free options to try the current MobileMe. Many have suspected that it would have to be free regardless in order to claim an edge over Google.

Google is believed close to launching its own Google Music store and streaming service, where a media locker would also play a role. The cost of online storage isn't known and could be as much as $25 per year.

    Such a detailed issue...

Deserves more than these ambiguous rumors can provide. Without the specific details of what it is, how it works and what it costs, this means little until it happens...and that's an uncertain "until."

In short, I'll believe it when I see it.

    Not that useful to me

Given the cost of data, it isn't that useful to me. And unlimited data services aren't going to last long when services like this are available.

    What I suspect

Basic MobileMe free including email, syncing, and the stuff we have now but smaller limits like 2GB, then a pay service that gives 20GB including the Media Locker for 25 bucks and maybe additional storage for 25 bucks for every 20GB.
