Amazon Kindle subs get New York Times website for 'free'

Amazon Kindle to get NYT web at no extra price

Amazon on Monday landed a deal to give Kindle readers a route around the newly active New York Times paywall. Those who already subscribe to the Kindle Edition of the newspaper will get free access to all of the website at no extra charge. The timing wasn't outlined in the update.

A Kindle subscription costs a high $28 per month, costing less than an iPad subscription, but does include delivery over the built-in international 3G. An Apple device owner isn't filtered out by connection but has to pay separately for the 3G access.

The strategy answers one of the unanswered questions for the paywall, which gives access to 20 articles a month for free. Critics have asked why it charges $15 more to get the site on both the iPad and the iPhone when both can get to the web using the cheapest plan. Amazon's is the most expensive single-device plan available so far.
