RIM says carriers' 'jaws dropped' at 2011 BlackBerrys, 6.1

RIM call says jaws dropped at 2011 BlackBerry

RIM during the conference call discussing its latest results late Thursday gave hints that it expected much from its 2011 BlackBerry roadmap and OS 6.1. Co-chief Jim Balsillie said that "jaws dropped" among carriers and that they had an "outstanding" level of commitment, even in the face of devices from rivals. The only risk was getting the devices on time, he said.

He also characterized 6.1 as an "overhaul," not a minor upgrade. The new revision would arrive in the spring.

Most of the updates are expected to revolve around a major leap in speed and features among BlackBerry phones, which should include much faster 1GHz-plus processors and higher resolution screens up to 480x800. Among the changes would be hardware graphics acceleration for the first real OpenGL support on RIM's phones as well as similar boosts for the WebKit browser.

Much is riding on the phones luring in wary customers. RIM has lost its lead in the US for market share as customers have been flocking to much faster and more advanced Android and iPhone devices. [via SAI]

    Dropping Jaws

If the carriers' jaws dropped it was most likely because they didn't think anyone would bring out something as antiquated as this phone.

    "On time"?

"The only risk was getting the devices on time, he said."

"On time", of course, being "summer 2008".

Methinks he misinterpreted the jaw-drop as being something good...

The fact that all carriers are so customer unfriendly, and the fact that they're excited about this phone makes me think that it must be a bad thing for consumers. Carriers like things that's good for them, not their customers.

    Their jaws dropped

"Oooh!" They said. "It's Magic! Right? Magic? 'Cause we need some of that magic. We need it bad."
