O2 delays Xperia Play but Verizon on time

O2 UK on Friday said it would delay the launch of the Xperia Play past its original April 1 target. Internal testing had shown "some bugs" that would sour the experience for early buyers. It was collaborating with Sony Ericsson to make sure they were fixed and still left a window open for an April 1 launch if they were fixed in time.

Orange and Vodafone haven't mentioned any changes of their own.

In the US, the Android gaming phone is on track but should arrive at Verizon somewhat later, either in late April or early May. Its version is fundamentally identical outside of the necessary switch from GSM and HSPA 3G to use CDMA and EVDO 3G.

The phone is Sony Ericsson's most ambitious smartphone to date and combines PSP Go-like gamepad controls with a touchscreen. The phone is a typical early 2011 phone on the inside with a second-generation 1GHz Snapdragon, a five-megapixel camera and 8GB of built-in storage, but its software is a key difference. It's so far the first and only PlayStation Suite device and can play both ported PS1 games as well as, eventually, original titles. [via Pocket-lint]
