NeatWorks for Mac 3.5: tax improvements, better performance

updated 06:25 pm EDT, Tue March 22, 2011

Version 3.5 ads improved 3rd-party scanner support

The Neat Company has released an update to its Mac scanning software, NeatWorks for Mac v3.5. The software works with both of the company's scanners, the NeatDesk for Mac and the mobile NeatReceipts for Mac. The scanning software uses optical character recognition and parsing technology to scan information on receipts, business cards and documents, then extracts data to create expense reports, complete tax forms, add to contact lists and track spending. The v3.5 update adds more income tax support, with a new tax report function that rolls up tax-deductible expenses by category. It also offers improved export to Turbo Tax, Excel and Numbers.

Performance is improved with better OCR and parsing accuracy, requiring less manual entry, and other enhancements that reduce folder loading and image processing times. Neat has expanded its support for third party scanners, now working with the latest Fujitsu ScanSnap scanners, as well as HP and Canon scanners.

System requirements are an Intel chip Mac with Mac OS X 10.5.8 and 1GB of RAM, with 3GB of RAM recommended. The software is $80.

    Tried it

I tried this Neat system last year.

    Returned it.

    Slow and unimpressive.

    Horribly Unstable!

Horribly unstable :( NeatWorks is at version 3.5 now released March 2011 and is still practically unusable! - I made a short video review showing the problems, hope somebody finds this useful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoUcSE6Mf7M
