Boxee to update Box browser, release streaming app for iPad

updated 03:50 pm EDT, Mon March 21, 2011

Fate of desktop software remains unclear

Boxee has announced details surrounding an upcoming iPad app, along with an update to the software that runs on the company's set-top box. In a TechWebcast podcast, Boxee marketing VP Andrew Kippen confirmed earlier rumors that pointed to a new tablet app in the works. Although the company already offers a remote control app, the new utility, which is said to only work with the iPad 2, will allow users to stream content to a TV via AirPlay or view previews of items that are being watched by friends.

Kippen suggests v1.5 of the Box software will focus on browser enhancements, bringing faster launch times and page loads. Support for content coded in Flash, HTML5 or CSS3 is also said to be improved.

While Boxee continues to develop its Box software and companion apps, the company appears to be stalling on its desktop software. Kippen noted that the desktop updates are "on hold;" it remains unclear if the current beta, v0.9, will be dropped entirely or simply follow a delayed schedule. [via TechAU]
