AMD Llano APU to challenge Intel Sandy Bridge this summer

updated 05:30 am EDT, Fri March 18, 2011

Up to 1 billion transistors

A report suggests that AMD will launch six of its eagerly anticipated Llano-series APU's for desktops this summer, with another five APUs due in the fall. The new chips feature a CPU with up to four cores, as well as an integrated GPU that is Direct X 11 and OpenGL 4.0 compatible. The 32nm design will pit AMD head-to-head with Intel in battle where AMD will be on a much more even footing after lagging in CPU performance in recent times. AMD is expected to officially unveil its new line at Computex Taipei 2011.

According to Digitimes industry sources, the new Llano APUs will include the A8-3550 and A6-3450 due in summer, with the A8-3560 and A4-3360 due in the fall. AMD is also expected to release three Zacate-series APUs in the summer, including the dual-core E-300, E-450 and E2-3250.

However, enthusiasts will be keen to benchmark the new AMD Llano APUs, in particular. AMD had previously demonstrated a fully functioning example of the Llano series processors at its Technical Forum last October. The performance of the chip was exceptional on the DirectCompute stats, which saw it reach 30 gigaflops on combined CPU and GPU speed, significantly exceeding the performance a typical processor that does not work in tandem with its GPU.

AMD's own timeline had the chips originally shipping in Q2, but it now appears that Q3 is the earliest that the Llano Fusion chips will ship.
