Netflix says House of Cards deal not a strategy switch

Netflix content chief talks about House of Cards

The rumor of Netflix having purchased the yet-to-be-filmed TV drama House of Cards has now been made official. The political thriller stars Kevin Spacey and spans 26 episodes in two seasons. In an interview with AllThingsD, Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos explained that the deal didn't represent a major change in the way the company does business.

Netflix traditionally buys the rights to stream or rent shows and movies that were already produced. With House of Cards, the company just took a larger risk than usual, Sarandos said. It will share the cost of producing the show with Media Rights Capital, its producer and owner. This is the first time Netflix is licensing a show that hasn't been completed. Netflix isn't required to pay until the show is delivered.

Sarandos didn't reveal how much producing the show will cost or what Netflix's share would be. The show will also eventually be syndicated and sold on DVD, with Netflix being the first to have it on offer. If it's popular from the start, Sarandos adds, it won't be more expensive than licensing an existing popular show from a network.

House of Cards will debut in the US and Canada on Netflix in late 2012. Its Executive Producer is David Fincher, and the political drama is based on the book and BBC mini-series of the same name. Each episode will be one hour long.
