Canon exec says Micro Four Thirds stems from failures

updated 05:10 pm EDT, Fri March 18, 2011

Canon has no current plans to enter CSC segment

Canon Europe head of consumer imaging Rainer Fuehres says that Canon has no need to enter the mirrorless compact system camera (CSC) segment. In an interview with Amateur Photography, Fuehres argues that the segment has only evolved because manufacturers who have introduced them have failed to compete with Canon and Nikon in the DSLR segment. While not ruling out the possibility that Canon will introduce a CSC, Fuehres indicated that it would only likely happen if Canon could offer something different.

'The idea of the compact system camera is nothing to do with whether the camera has a mirror or not, but about creating a small and more portable system. If Canon does take part I hope we won't introduce just a me-too product, but we'll use the opportunity to do something different,' Fuehres said. 'For Canon it would be about connectivity and providing high image quality in a small form'.

Manufacturers to have introduced cameras in the CSC include Olympus and Panasonic who co-developed the Micro Fourth Thirds standard. Subsequently, Samsung with its NX system cameras and Sony with its NEX series have also joined the segment with their own take. In a further sign of the increasing popularity of CSCs, Carl Zeiss and Schneider Kreuznach both recently announced that they would introduce third-party support for Micro Four Thirds lenses. To remain competitive, in the segment, Sony has even opened up its proprietary E-mount lens connectivity standard to third-parties.

When asked by Amateur Photography about whether Canon would enter the mirrorless segment or work towards developing a more compact EOS DSLR, Fuerhes was not in a position to comment. [via Amateur Photography]
