Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi up for pre-order

updated 05:00 pm EDT, Thu March 17, 2011

Tablet priced at $599 from Amazon

Shortly after Motorola confirmed plans to launch a Wi-Fi version of its Xoom tablet, some retailers have already listed the device for pre-order. Amazon is currently taking pre-orders for the full retail price of $599. Customers will have to wait until March 27 for the tablet to ship, when it will also arrive at other retailers such as Best Buy, Costco, Sam's Club, Walmart and Radio Shack, among others.

The new offering moves to alleviate the pricing disparity that is believed to have contributed to slow sales of the 3G model through Verizon. Customers can now pick up the 32GB Wi-Fi model for the same price as Apple's 32GB iPad 2 without 3G connectivity.

Aside from the lack of a 3G modem, the Wi-Fi Xoom is built with the same hardware as the current model. Both tablets share a 10.1-inch display with 1280x800 resolution, a 1GHz Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM and dual cameras.

I respect Google for not simply copying Apples iOS

unfortunately for Motorola the Android 3.0 interface looks extremely messy and geeky (ie. not designed with consumers in mind) so I can't see taking off. On top of that the Xoom looks and feels like a cheap PC (ie. black plastic) whereas the iPad looks and feels like a true consumer device with simplicity and ease of use in mind.

    Try again Motorola.
