Nintendo Wii 2 coming this year with HD support
With the Nintendo 3DS launch due next week, developers supporting video game giant has hinted it may focus on a replacement for the Wii. Frank Gibeau, label head at EA Games, said in a chat with IndustryGamers that he was aware of a follow-up coming. The device is mostly unknown and wasn't confirmed, but it will likely have HD support, finally rivaling competitors from Microsoft and Sony.
"Now, they're coming back with a second act. I think they know that. They're very self-aware as an organization and a very powerful brand," Gibeau said.
Nintendo has been one of the most conservative console makers and largely built the Wii using faster but nearly identical processors from the GameCube. It has often refused to discuss the possibility of a sequel as long as sales continued to dominate, but the Wii has been slipping in sales recently.
Some believe the new console will make a debut at the E3 show in June. [via SlashGear]
