Kyocera Echo to ship April 17 for $200

updated 03:20 pm EDT, Mon March 14, 2011

Sprint dates Kyocera Echo for April 17

Sprint today dated and priced the Kyocera Echo. Its one-off, dual-screen Android phone we tried ourselves should ship April 17, with pre-orders starting March 26. The device is still locked in for a $200 price on contract.

The Echo's signature trick is a sliding design that can link the two displays in different ways. They can run two simultaneous apps, combine to run special, optimized individual apps that fill both screens, or span to create a larger single environment. Its design can use one screen as a keyboard or close shut to use just one screen, like with a traditional phone.

Inside, it represents a typical Android 2.2 phone with a five-megapixel, 720p-capable camera. Sprint mostly customizes it with its own apps and a bundled 8GB microSDHC card to get users started.

We liked the phone in our test but had questions about whether or not developers will optimize for one, relatively small phone manufacturer's phone on the third-largest US carrier.
