Apple to start taking online iPad 2 orders at 1AM Pacific

updated 09:50 am EST, Thu March 10, 2011

GarageBand and iMovie out today

Online orders of the iPad 2 will open at Apple around 1AM Pacific time on Friday, or about 4AM Eastern, according to the company. The timing mirrors that announced by AT&T, one of Apple's two US carrier partners. Buyers will otherwise have to line up for 5PM (local time) launches at retail chains, including not just Apple and AT&T but Best Buy, Target, Verizon, Walmart and some smaller resellers.

Each purchase at an Apple Store will be eligible for Personal Setup service, in which the company configures things like e-mail and apps. The iPad versions of GarageBand and iMovie will meanwhile be released at the App Store today, at a price of $5 each. Brief guided tours can be seen on Apple's website.

    1. Starting selling all at once contributes to the "big event" feeling.
    2. No one selling partner gets an advantage over another partner by starting earlier.

There will be idiots who'll set their alarms to wake them up at 4am specifically so they can order as soon as possible.

    More Info Needed

Still missing important info for current iPad 1 owners. Will our apps transfer over (automatically) to the new iPad2 along with our mail and other subscriptions and if so, how? Via iTunes when we plug it in? And what about those of us with unlimited AT&T data plans - how do we get those transferred over to the new iPad2?

And ... once all is transferred does our iPad 1 return to original state minus the apps, settings, data service?

    Answers please.
