AT&T takes online iPad 2 orders at 4AM, Verizon retail only

updated 08:55 am EST, Thu March 10, 2011

ATT and Verizon confirm iPad 2 intro details

Both AT&T and Verizon on Thursday locked in last-minute release plans for the iPad 2. AT&T said it would join Apple in offering online orders but would start at 4AM Eastern. Its plans remain identical, but unlike last year now have the option of a tablet subscription plan for those who need more than what prepaid will offer.

Either data plan model costs $15 for 250MB or $25 for 2GB. Overages depend on the payment method; prepaid users can pay for another block of data, where subscription users pay either $15 for another 250MB or $10 for each extra gigabyte on the 2GB plan. Neither requires a contract.

Verizon has meanwhile said it won't sell the iPad 2 online at launch and is instead having customers either line up at a retail store for the 5PM launch or call in at the same time. Its plans aren't prepaid but also don't require a contract. They remain the same as for the original iPad + MiFi bundles and start at $20 for 1GB, moving to $35 for 3GB, $50 for 5GB and $80 for 10GB.

Both carriers price their tablets identically, at $630 for a 16GB model, $730 for 32GB and $830 for 64GB.
