Microsoft to detail Windows Phone 7's Mango, roadmap in May

Windows Phone 7 Mango and roadmap due in May

Microsoft is planning to show both its Mango update for Windows Phone 7 and the platform's long-term roadmap in May, according to clues on Wednesday. A UK Tech.Days event slated for May 25 only has a generic description so far, but it should include both more details of Mango beyond what was shown at Mobile World Congress last month as well as long term strategy. The info given to WinRumors didn't say what would be entailed beyond the mobile IE9, multitasking and Twitter integration with the People hub.

Windows Phone marketing corporate VP Achim Berg has already hinted that more information about Mango would come after the MIX11 developer event in April, but he didn't commit to a schedule for alleged fear of competitors copying technology. The update is believed to be going public near Windows Phone's one-year anniversary, around October or November, and might be called Windows Phone 7.5 to emphasize that it's more than a patch.

Microsoft has been facing mounting pressure to upgrade WP7. Where Apple and Google have both had multiple minor and major updates since WP7 launched, Microsoft has so far had just its flawed preparatory update. iOS 4.3 could launch as soon as today and would end up beating Microsoft's first real upgrade, the NoDo patch for copy-and-paste text.
