Acer claims larger than expected orders for its tablets

Set to overtake Apple in 2 to 3 years?

Acer has claimed that it has received more orders for its tablets than it is currently able to fulfill. The company has adopted a carrier model that will see its tablets ship on contract-bundled sales. According to the company, its three Iconia series tablets set to launch over March and April have generated more orders than it had anticipated leading to the supply shortfall. Acer also added that tight supply of touch panels, in particular, would also make it difficult to meet the total number of orders that it has received.

According to the Digitimes report, the first Acer tablet out of the gate will be the 10-inch Windows 7-based Acer Iconia W500 due in mid-March. The second with be the 10-inch Honeycomb-based Acer Iconia A500 in late March. It then plans to ship a 7-inch Android-based Acer Iconia A100, which will be joined by the launch of its large 4.8-inch Acer Iconia Smart smartphone in April.

Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci has previously stated that he hopes to beat Apple in the tablet space within two to three years. While that lofty goal may seem unlikely given Apple's current stranglehold on the tablet market, the announcement that Acer has received strong initial interest in its tablets could be a positive sign for the company. Alternatively, it could represent a more cynical attempt at trying to generate interest in its tablets so that they don't get lost amid a slew of tablet launches over the coming months.
