Samsung's 4G Verizon phone seen, given mid-April date

Samsung i520 LTE phone seen with Stealth badge

A new slip late Tuesday showed a rare instance of Samsung's 4G phone for Verizon appearing in the wild. Now believed to be called the Stealth or i510 based on its FCC filing, the LTE device spotted by TechnoBuffalo had already been customized with LauncherPro instead of Samsung's usual TouchWiz interface. The source noted that battery life on the 1,500mAh battery was unusually good and could last for eight to 10 hours despite the power-hungry LTE hardware.

The Stealth is a mix of old and new technology and could sit at the relative budget end of Verizon's 4G phones. It still has the 1GHz Hummingbird chip and Android 2.2 of the nearly year-old Galaxy S but has a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen that's a visual upgrade from the old model. An eight-megapixel back camera, a 1.3-megapixel front camera and Wi-Fi hotspot support for up to eight devices are all new along with the much faster 4G speeds.

The same tip provider showing the device gave it a mid-April release target, which would be consistent with Verizon's aim of having all the phones it showed at CES shipped by mid-year. It should eventually support an upgrade to Android 2.3 or later but hasn't been given a timeframe.
