Microsoft sells 10m Kinects, passes iPad for Guinness record

Microsoft moves 10m Kinects in record time

Microsoft reached a pair of milestones today with the Kinect that also gave it a minor win against Apple. The company said it had sold 10 million of the Xbox 360 motion controller since its November 4 debut, eight million of which were in the first 60 days. It averaged about 133,333 of the add-ons.

The achievement was enough to be certified as a Guinness world record for the fastest-selling home electronics device. The figure was enough to beat both the iPhone and iPad over similar timeframes, officials said. It would officially reach paper in the next version of the Gamer Edition of Guinness' World Records book.

Microsoft's achievement may have finally seen it reach expectations set by the company's Game Studios manager Kudo Tsunoda, who anticipated that Kinect would "blow away" iPad sales months before it went on sale. The record wasn't necessarily difficult, as a Kinect costs $150 and isn't tied to a service plan like the iPhone. It was still partly unexpected as it came despite its having to appeal either to existing Xbox 360 owners or to newcomers willing to spend at least $300 for an Xbox 360 Arcade bundle with the Kinect included.

Apple reached the 10 million mark for the iPad only sometime in the fall, roughly half a year after it shipped. Limited distribution and supply were partly to blame, since it didn't expand outside of the US until May and didn't escape display-related shortages until the summer.

The iPad 2 may create a challenge for Microsoft, since international buyers will get it just two weeks later. US distribution will also be much wider at its launch on Friday.

    add-on device vs iPad

there should be 2 categories for home electronics really, add-on device, and a self-contained device
(although you could argue that the iPad requires another computer at least once, from that point on it doesn't)
considering the cheapest iPad is nearly 4x the cost, it did quite well =)

Well, score one for MS. I didn't expect it to sell this well, but obviously they've tapped into a desire even more effectively than the Wii did in its day.

I haven't yet actually seen a single game that makes me want one, but based on those numbers its either got the momentum to generate them, or people see more in the current offerings than I do.

comparing phone sales is bad enough...

I get tired of the "android is out selling the iPhone" argument as I think comparing an os on many different manufacturers phones to one phone is disingenuous but there is at least some basis for comparison as phones compete against each other. This comparison is outright stupid as the iPhone and IPad do not compete in any way with the kinect. The kinect is a game system accessory and the IPhone and iPad are stand alone electronic devices. It is like saying that Goodyear truck tires outsold Mini Coopers.

    Sell or Ship?

Since this information is coming from Microsoft the question has to be asked: did they "sell" 10 million or did they "ship" 10 million?

And I agree, comparing sales of two different types of products is pretty pointless.

I find this to be a silly comparison, it averaged sales of 133 units per day, not an average of 133.33 in add ons. The article fails to mention the fact the XBox 360 sales also increased dramatically because of purchasers acquiring the game systems at the same time.

Either way good news for Xbox and Microsoft.

Bottom line: Apple made a fortune from

selling iPads at 4X the cost of a Kinect and the iPad basically ate into any revenue Microsoft got from Kinect by dampening Windows netbook license sales. Besides, the iPad 2 will be out in a couple of days and may break that Kinect record in short order.

    "minor" win over Apple...

at least until the iPad 2 goes on sale this Friday. Don't wait for that ink to dry just yet!

I agree that this comparison is really Apples to oranges (no pun intended).

    Big deal, ooh wee. NOT!

XBox attachment doesn't equal an iPad in significants. I sold 100 million USB adapter to your 99 million iMacs. The comparison is STUPID!!!!
