HP chief: every HP PC will dual-boot webOS in 2012

HP PCs to all have webOS in 2012

HP chief Leo Apotheker in an interview said webOS would be a regular feature of all HP computers in the future. Expanding on details from the webOS event, the executive promised that all 2012 HP computers would boot webOS as well as Windows. He told Bloomberg he hoped to spur on app creation that would make HP's PCs stand out from the generic crowd.

"You create a massive platform," he said, referring to the tens of millions of desktops and notebooks shipped every year by HP.

HP has often loaded special interfaces and software on its computers, but they have never been popular enough to be singled out as attractors. The software on its TouchSmart PCs only provides touchscreen support for certain tasks, and HP's past use of pre-boot interfaces like Splashtop haven't been unique. WebOS gives it a mobile OS that could start almost instantly but which could be used almost exclusively for many tasks instead of having to resort to Windows.

Much of HP's webOS attention is still focused on dedicated mobile devices such as the TouchPad, Pre3, and Veer, but it has planned to make the OS ubiquitous across its entire line. The move could give webOS a much-needed profile increase to improve its stance against the much larger Android and iOS platforms.

Don't Look Now, Mr. Ballmer ...

... but you're about to be dual booted: on the desktop first and then as CEO of Microsoft.

    Oh joy...

Yet another reason not to buy an HP computer...

    I really wish em luck...

cause the Android OS devices are coming along pretty well these days, and the fact that Apple currently retains the beachhead is only the first skirmish in this war.

I say more power to them! This has been a long time coming. I hope they succeed. Along with WebOS which should mean there will finally be a decent OS to run on a PC, HP needs to improve the quality of their consumer products and laptops, which are currently fairly dismal. Their servers are excellent and their business desktops are okay though.

After a year, HP will discover that only a tiny, tiny fraction of customers boot into WebOS more than a few times, and quietly discontinue the dual-boot mode on at least some of their products.

And in related news. . .

Nintendo has announced that the Wii will acquire the capability to run native Nintendo DS and 3DS games.

When the whole direction of computing is to tailor the software to tightly fit the device and the intended use of the device, HP will try to go the opposite and have one device to run the differently-purposed apps? Or have one app run in differently-purposed devices?

This is only useful for developers who want a more convenient way to test their WebOS apps.

WebOS: grossly underestimated by most iPhanatics

I would buy an HP to go along with my MacBook Pros should WebOS, indeed, boot in WebOS. Some here like to bash anything non-Apple, but WebOS is as close to OS X (iOS) as it gets.
