Philips intros 21:9 TV with 3D, 400Hz HDTVs

Philips has just announced the upcoming release of a new ultra wide screen TV with the Cinema 21:9 Gold. Sporting a wider aspect ratio than traditional 16:9 HDTVs, the 50-inch set also gets passive 3D technology. Dubbed Easy 3D by Philips, it promises 3D images with light, simple eyeglasses that are cheaper than their powered, active shutter 3D equivalents.

While the TV is meant for cinema buffs, it can show regular 16:9 content without distortion, with dead space on either side. There is also a 2D to 3D upconversion feature, and the TV can distort content to fill the screen.

The LED backlit screen has a 100Hz refresh rate and includes Philips' Smart TV feature for web apps, social media, streaming and other Internet content. A USB recording feature is also present.

There is no indication of when the set will launch or what it will cost.
At the same time, Philips showed its freshened up 9000 series, with active shutter 3D technology called 3D Max. The company promises the fastest response time on the market along with the deepest blacks and brightest whites in terms of color reproduction. Models larger than 32 inches get 400Hz panels. Those larger than 40 inches get the Ambilight Spectra XL feature, or a double row of color LEDs for background mood lighting.

All have built-in Wi-Fi and the company's Smart TV feature for connecting to the web and accessing apps. For sound, there is a 40W RMS speaker system built-in. A two-player gaming mode is integrated, as is 2D to 3D upconversion.

Also due soon are the lower-end 8000-series TVs with 3D Max and the 7000 series with Easy 3D.

Pricing or ship dates remain unknown at this time. [via PocketLint]
