Lenovo ThinkPad X220 gets 24h battery, new Core i7

Lenovo gave its ThinkPad X series a major refresh on Tuesday with a generational leap. The X220 notebook and X220t tablet both use a newer 12.5-inch, IPS-based rich color display but thrive with a new external ThinkPad battery pack. They can last up to nine and eight hours respectively on extended internal batteries, but the battery pack pushes them up to 15 hours on the X220t and a full 24 hours on the X220.

The swap to a new screen gave Lenovo a new opportunity for a redesign. A self-closing hinge makes for more room for a larger, multi-touch trackpad as well as better speaker and wireless antenna layouts. X220t owners also get their own touches with a much brighter 300-nit touchscreen that uses Gorilla Glass to improve their resistance to shattering or just casual scratching. The X220 notebook is the lighter of the two at under three pounds, where the swivelling display adds an extra 0.9 pounds to the X220t.

As 2011 systems, both of them move to Intel's Sandy Bridge processors and are potentially faster than many of the systems in their class by using full-power notebook chips instead of low-voltage hardware usually reserved for the class. Other than the touchscreen on the X220t, both are very similar inside and have options of anything from a 2.1GHz Core i3 up to a 2.7GHz Core i7 for a processor. They can all have up to 8GB of RAM, 3G or 4G modems, and as much as a 320GB hard drive or a 160GB SSD for storage.

Lenovo plans for both systems to ship in April and is starting them at $899 for an X220 and $1,199 for the X220t.
