Windows Phone 7's Mango update may miss 2011, hurt Nokia

Windows Phone 7 Mango update not seen until 2012

Microsoft's promised major Windows Phone 7 update, nicknamed Mango, might miss 2011 entirely and could damage Nokia in the process. Leaks from sources suggested that the update with multitasking, IE9 and other improvements wouldn't be finished until the end of the year. An actual launch before 2012 would be a "near impossibility," veteran Windows tech writer Paul Thurrott was told by his sources.

Mango has never been given an official timeframe, but the delay would leave advocates of WP7 like Dell, HTC, LG and Samsung without an important feature update to keep it competitive relative to their own Android phones or to outside rivals like the iPhone. Multitasking is now a common feature on most platforms outside of WP7, whose start from scratch forced Microsoft to go without to make its launch last year.

Nokia may have been hurt most of all. Its first WP7 device is already in development and has been reportedly aimed for a late 2011 launch, but without Mango it might be forced to 2012, leaving it with just its aging Symbian phones to carry it through the holidays. The GSM devices could ship with the imminent minor update, NoDo, but most of the plans have been informally tied to Mango.
