Amazon clarifies details of its Android Appstore DRM

updated 10:15 pm EST, Mon March 7, 2011

Retailer attempts to dispel rumors

Following Amazon's announcement of its Android Appstore and DRM protection, the retailer has attempted to clarify several of the terms that have been met with criticism or uncertainty. Developers will be able to opt out of the DRM option if they so choose. The system also works with a 'small token' that downloads to a user's device for authentication, enabling the service to work when an Internet connection is unavailable.

A number of developers voiced concern over the possibility that Amazon would require apps to integrate its DRM protection, rather than leaving it as an optional feature. Other fears focused on the authentication method, which was not fully detailed in the original announcement. Developers feared that applications might have required a constant Internet connection to communicate with Amazon DRM servers, however the company claims the Appstore client only periodically refreshes the token.

Amazon promises to post more updates in the coming weeks regarding its DRM system and Appstore developer program. [via PhanDroid]
