2011 Sony VAIO S reaches US shores

Following quickly on the heels of the European launch, Sony on Monday brought the 2011 VAIO S to the US. Its version shares the same "full flat" design that keeps 0.94 inches thick and has an optional sheet battery to keep it running much longer, here reportedly 15 hours. For the American version, Sony has mentioned the option of dual SSDs in a RAID stripe, much like the VAIO Z.

Most of the performance remains the same, including the options of dual-core Intel Core i5 and i7 processors, Radeon HD 6630M graphics and WiDi 2.0 wireless video streaming to an adapter. Some models can get a Blu-ray combo drive, but all of them have backlit keyboards and a back-illuminated CMOS sensor on the webcam to better catch the subject in low light.

Pre-orders should start later on Monday and will start out at $970. The sheet battery will cost $150.
