Olympus leaks hint single-shot HDR, translucent mirrors

updated 01:30 pm EST, Fri March 4, 2011

Olympus DSLRs may get single-shot HDR and more

Olympus is working to significantly improve the quality of its E-series DSLRs and possibly its Micro Four Thirds cameras based on slips from sources. It would add a single-shot high dynamic range function that would put more details in highlights and shots, the 4/3Rumors tipsters said. With the exception of a few newer DSLRs, many create HDR by compositing multiple shots and rule out action shots or many handheld situations.

The company is also expected to join Sony in having translucent mirrors on its DSLRs based both on a patent (PDF) and the insiders. Translucency results in a much faster autofocus time and can lead to quick burst shooting as well as video with fast, continuous autofocus.

Other additions would include a better sensor shift system that would account for rotation, a battery grip with audio and video input, and a larger multi-format sensor with video support much as like Panasonic's GH1 and GH2 cameras.

Timeframes for these haven't been given out, but they might not arrive for awhile. If coming, the cameras themselves haven't surfaced and may be months off or longer.
