Sony quietly drops PSP Go to $150

PSP Go price cut to 150 to clear path for NGP

Sony has quietly followed up its PSP price cut with a drop for the PSP Go. Its 16GB, download-only console now has a permanent $150 price, matching Best Buy's sale from late last year. The reduction is the second official drop for the PSP Go since October, when it fell another $50.

The cut hasn't been explained but should have the same motives as for the regular PSP. Sony is thought to be dropping prices to keep up sales for customers who would otherwise have held off until the NGP arrived in the fall. It may also have been concerned that the iPod touch was too close in price and was stealing a large number of sales through the cheaper games.

Later this month, Sony will also have to compete directly with the 3DS, which while $250 is now more advanced than the PSP Go in many areas. A DSi already costs $150.

    PSP Gone

Apple, in many ways, is the new Sony. And Apple has learned from Sony's failures.

It will be interesting to see if how long the legacy handheld gaming platforms survive against iPod touch, iPhone and iPad when they all have the A5 SoC and the new ultra-fast graphics chip.

And, of course, Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo's common worst nightmare is Apple TV running apps and games. With the A5 chip and ultra-fast graphics chip from iPad 2. For $99. With world class games instantly available for $1-$10.

When that happens, it's lights out for the legacy consoles too.
