NVIDIA confirms Samsung Galaxy S II version with Tegra 2

NVIDIA says Galaxy S II will have Tegra 2 edition

NVIDIA late Wednesday reportedly confirmed that a version of the Galaxy S II would ship with a Tegra 2 inside. Most will still get Samsung's own dual-core Exynos processor, but some countries will get the roughly performance-equivalent Tegra 2. It didn't explain the reasoning, but ITProPortal speculated that chip yields weren't good enough for the Exynos to be used exclusively.

A processor switch is unconventional for Samsung. The company is still known to willingly use different parts of other kinds to keep supplies up for the same basic device. Most of its Galaxy S and Nexus S phones use Super AMOLED screens, but it has been willing to use LCD when a shortage meant the alternative was to completely exclude a given model from the market.

The Galaxy S II is so far AMOLED-only and is likely to move over solely to the Exynos chip once supply is healthy enough for Samsung to depend on just its own processor.
