Comcast's Xfinity TV app reaches Android

updated 04:35 pm EST, Tue March 1, 2011

Xfinity TV for Android has DVR, live TV due soon

Months after its iOS version arrived, Comcast today put out an Android version of Xfinity TV. The app gives Comcast subscribers both an immediate remote control for most TV set-tops as well as a way to remotely schedule the DVR or buy on-demand movies. The programming guide serves as a jumping point for many actions and can be filtered just to show HD programming, kids' shows or other material.

The app is free aside from the subscription and will work with most Android 2.1 and 2.2 devices, although it isn't officially known to work on tablets or Android 2.3 hardware like the Google Nexus S despite Comcast's own imagery. An unusual quirk also exists that prevents the HTC Aria from working due to its inability to load apps which need more than 16MB of RAM by themselves.

Much as with the iOS edition, the Android build will eventually let users watch live video directly and should allow for TV 'playlists' as well as tailored listings and recommendations. Comcast hasn't given a timeline other than "soon."
