Danger Sidekick users on T-Mobile get death notice

updated 04:35 am EST, Tue March 1, 2011

Samsung Sidekick 4G likely replacement

T-Mobile has issued a statement that has sounded the death knell for Danger Sidekick users. Danger was purchased by Microsoft, which ultimately resulted in the failed Microsoft Kin devices. Following the shuttering of Kin's cloud-based services, T-Mobile has announced that Sidekick users will see their cloud-based services discontinued after May 31.

The termination of the cloud-service feature significantly reduces the functionality offered by the phone and has prompted T-Mobile to promise users that they will be appeased. The statement by T-Mobile states that, "T-Mobile will provide offers for our Sidekick customers before May 31, 2011, to help make an easy transition from their existing Sidekick device to a new device. We will have more information to share about these offers with our customers in the weeks ahead."

T-Mobile has set up an enhanced Web tool on myT-mobile.com in order to assist customers in migrating their cloud-based information including personal data, contacts, photos and email to another device, including customer's computers.

A likely replacement to be offered to current Sidekick users is the forthcoming Samsung Sidekick 4G pictured below. It is said to support HSPA+ and will sport Android 2.2.1. It is set for a Spring release, likely timed for current Sidekick users who want a similar messaging-friendly design.
