Samsung to unveil new Galaxy Tab 8.9 at CTIA

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 confirmed for CTIA

Samsung on Monday sent a teaser to Electronista and others virtually confirming that the Galaxy Tab 8.9 would be unveiled at the CTIA phone show next month. Asking "what's your Tab life," it mentioned the digits 78910, indicating that it would have a tablet in between the seven-inch Galaxy Tab and the 10-inch Galaxy Tab 10.1. The gathering, badged as a "special episode" of its Unpacked media events, would take place on March 22.

Little is known about what the 8.9 would entail, but it's likely to use Android 3.0 and would otherwise be a downscaled version of the 10.1. Samsung doesn't have much room to move in performance as the NVIDIA Tegra 2 is the virtual baseline for current Android tablets, but reduced storage and lower-resolution cameras would be options. An appearance at the telecom-backed CTIA show virtually guarantees that a 3G or 4G version will be available through a carrier.

The 8.9-inch system may be an attempt to produce a larger tablet that could still undercut the iPad on price. It may likewise be an attempt to shut out the similarly-sized LG Optimus Pad.

    Instant collectors' item

Special limited-edition items like Galaxy Tab are sure to be valuable in the future. Say, 2060-2070. Could be worth thousands by then.
