Sony to equip Alpha DSLRs with fixed mirrors

Sony announced at a yearly expo in Spain that it will put translucent mirrors in its Alpha-branded DSLR cameras, Quesabesde reported on Thursday. All models will get the fixed mirror, including entry-level shooters. This should simplify the mechanism, as the mirrors will no longer move.

As such, however, the cameras will no longer fall under the Single Lens Reflex category, but rather Single Lens Translucent, like the company's A33 and A55 cameras. The switch allows light to hit both the autofocus and image sensors and therefore refocus while the sensor is still recording the last image. Burst shooting speeds can thus be improved, while the cameras themselves can be made smaller as room for the reflex mechanism isn't needed. [via PhotographyBlog]
