MobileMe now only available as free online trial

updated 12:15 pm EST, Fri February 25, 2011

Service moving rapidly towards new incarnation

MobileMe is indeed only available from Apple online, a worker at an Apple Store Genius Bar has confirmed. The person shares a screenshot from Apple's Sales Web interface, which prominently displays a "now exclusively available online" tagline. The website also explicitly mentions the removal of boxed copies from Apple Stores, but not the elimination of a bundle option for online orders.

Apple moreover appears to have removed any option of actually paying for MobileMe. While people can sign up for a free 60-day trial at Apple's website, there is no choice to pay for either an Individual or Family Pack account. These would normally cost $99 or $149, respectively.

Apple is believed to be converting MobileMe into a free service, one with greatly expanded functions. Chief among these is use as a media locker, allowing people to access their music, photos and/or video on an iOS device without having to sync it. The upgraded MobileMe may be unveiled next week at a special press event.

    reactivating old trial account

when the rumours of MobileMe going free hit last summer I created a trial account. I cancelled it before the 60 days expired, but it remains 'in storage' and as a place holder for me.

I was able to get a reset password issued, but I havent logged back in yet. I'm wondering if it would seek to apply a subscription fee if I did so?

I have just paid for a full years subscription on the 9th of Jan. Do you think apple might give me a refund of some sort? I have been a loyal user on mobile me from the first itool accounts and didn't want to loose my mac.com email address so have kept paying for the service even though I could have done gone elsewhere for cheaper or free. Come on Apple do the right thing here and give me a refund.

    New Renewal

I just renewed in December. Upgraded it to a family pack too!

I'm thinking the entire list of services isn't going to be free, with some of the add-ons requiring a fee.

What else would they use?? No one uses Safari anymore. Internet Explorer is not available on iOSX. Firefox is bloated and slow.

Google Chrome is the only way to go.
H.264? Who needs that craap? 5 years from now, it will be forgotten.
