Motorola Xoom runs ROM manager tool in two hours

Early adopters have already managed to run some of the first unofficial firmware tools on the just-launched Xoom. ClockworkMod Recovery creator Koushik Dutta said he had successfully put the ROM manager on the Xoom less than two hours after he bought the tablet in Seattle. The utility is the first known running on an Android 3.0 tablet and will let users add custom firmware as soon as it's developed.

Loading custom code is much easier on the Xoom than it has been on most earlier Motorola Android devices. The Xoom has an unlocked bootloader, much like a Nexus One or Nexus S, and won't try to block custom firmware automatically such as on a Droid 2 or Droid X.

Dutta and others haven't yet achieved root, which would be necessary to get more control over the system files than what Google allows. The wider freedoms over the Xoom's copy of the OS than on most Android devices should make it relatively simple to reach and could lead to very heavy customization of Android 3.0 soon.
