Apple confirms March 2 event, taunts Android tablets

Apple sends invite for March 2 iPad event

Apple as rumored has sent invitations to a special event on March 2. The teaser makes clear that the event will surround the next iPad and calls out Android tablets, inviting users to "come see what 2011 will be the year of." The event as suspected will be at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco at 10AM Pacific.

The image shows a current-generation iPad and doesn't give any clues as to what the next model will entail. Most expect it to go dual-core with an ARM Cortex-A9 chip, possibly called the A5. It should also make the leap to dual-core PowerVR graphics that could enable 1080p video and much more advanced 3D detail. Front and back cameras will keep it competitive with a rash of other tablets and should bring both FaceTime chat as well as Photo Booth and video recording.

The tablet should be the first with built-in Verizon-ready 3G and may be a dual-mode device with both Verizon's EVDO and HSPA inside. Modern Qualcomm chipsets open the door to the possibility of HSPA+ on carriers like AT&T that would provide much faster 3G speeds.

The lone sentence is a direct play on claims by analysts that 2011 would be the year of the Android tablet. It may also be a thinly veiled reference to Motorola's attempts to play on Apple's ads and arguing that 2011 won't be the Xoom's year.

    Apple's answer to the...

ninnies who will be comparing Android based tablets to the original iPAD.

They still don't get that Apple invested years into working these things out. The XOOM won't be going anywhere, except to ZOOM out of the room.

The Xoom is not a comparison to the original iPad. Its dual Core, front and back cameras, and the latest OS on the planet in Android 3.0. How does that compare to the original iPad?

So far, the iPAD 2 is not confirmed to have these specs, although we assume it will match the Xoom from a hardware perspective.

Sorry, but we all know the iPad is the device. All you're spouting is specs. Specs is what people mention when they know their device is worse than Apple's device.

And since we all know these features have been rumored for the iPad 2, it is obvious that they stole these ideas from apple to make the Xoom. It's basically a copycat device that was released before the original, that's all.

Really? You beleive the Xoom is a copycat device? It uses Dual Core Nvidia chipset, and Apple won't be, it has the front/back cameras, Apple will just be getting it, and it is out 2 months prior to the iPad 2? So... your correct. It also is on Android 3.0.

If you really want to mention copy cat.. look back to all the tablets over the past 10+ years..
None of them took off due to the lack of mobile connectivity we now have today.

Either way, Android is forcing Apple to work harder, and that is good for everyone.

Hardware is hardware, how does it run? How are the apps? How does it fit in your daily life.

Virtually every new app created is now on both platforms, so you will see it basically boil down to price and features.
