Counter-leaks: next iPad isn't delayed

updated 12:20 pm EST, Tue February 22, 2011

Counterclaims have iPad 2 on track for April

A pair of leaks emerged on mid-Tuesday that promptly countered beliefs that the next iPad might be delayed. Sources for both Reuters and Barclays Capital analyst Ben Reitzes insisted that the new Apple tablet was still on track. While the news outlet couldn't obtain more, Reitzes noted that Foxconn's parent company Hon Hai was expected to ship new iPads to customers in early April, about two million of which would reach customers that month.

He added that Apple was increasing capacity. The hinted at Chengdu plant should go through training and its first component sourcing in March. Some have suspected that the plant exists partly to help cope with the load of Apple devices being made, although it also exists to help lower costs for Foxconn by getting away from the more expensive Shenzhen area.

A delay for the next iPad to June would be uncharacteristic of Apple, which clings rigidly to a yearly update cycle or better whenever possible. It would also be dangerous for competitiveness, since the BlackBerry PlayBook, HP TouchPad, LG Optimus Pad, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and other tablets would all go temporarily unopposed.

The new model is poised to go dual-core and may have matching, next-generation PowerVR graphics to match. Dual cameras and possibly more storage should come at the same time, although it's uncertain if Apple will have separate EVDO and HSPA for 3G versions or create a unifying dual-mode model that could have its choice of networks.
