Atrix 4G harder to modify than expected

updated 01:05 pm EST, Tue February 22, 2011

Atrix 4G root files locked by Motorola

Those celebrating the early rooting of the Motorola Atrix 4G handset may be doing so prematurely, as an XDA Developers member maintained the partition is signed by Motorola. This keeps the files in the root can't be replaced by custom ones that include custom recovery or boot files. The practice is the same Motorola used for other handsets, including the Defy.

Hacking handsets is desirable as it removes any restrictions imposed by the carriers, such as not being able to install non-Market apps on AT&T phones or allowing for the removal of carrier apps that come preloaded. Users of hacked handsets also have more control over Android than Google allows, such as backing up and modifying the very deepest levels of the OS.
