Dell phases out XPS 14 to focus on thin and light future

updated 02:30 pm EST, Mon February 21, 2011

Dell XPS 14 axed to use tech in future ultrathins

Dell started off the week with word that it was dropping the smallest of its new XPS line, the XPS 14. It sold beyond estimates, but the company decided in the switch to Sandy Bridge-based Core processors to "re-focus" its strategy by bringing some of the user feedback on the 14-inch notebook into "future thin and light products." The resulting spinoff would happen sometime later in 2011, Engadget heard.

The company didn't outline its intentions, but the recent end of the Adamo line may be an indication that Dell is planning to roll some of the higher performance and other design traits of the XPS 14 into a computer that would fit into a more Adamo-like profile. While uncharacteristically small for performance notebooks, the XPS 14 was much thicker than a 13-inch MacBook Pro or other full-speed notebooks that are still considered thin and light.

The XPS 15 and 17 are still on sale and are expected to stay for the foreseeable future.
