Imagination slips out first PowerVR SGX600 details

Imagination Technologies in a low-profile step has given out the very first details of its next-generation PowerVR mobile graphics. The 6 series, nicknamed Rogue, is expected to be an exponential speed boost; it should be at least 20 and as much as 100 times faster than the SGX500 series graphics it would replace, the chip designer said. Simultaneously, it won't use any more than one milliwatt of power, keeping it suitable for smartphones and tablets.

While the company hasn't outlined what the capabilities will be, ST-Ericsson has already given an estimate for what a production chip could do. Its future Nova A9600 will combine a 2.5GHz ARM Cortex-A15 with the PowerVR 6 to produce virtually desktop-level graphics; it should handle 350 million real-world polygons per second and five gigapixels per second, ST-Ericsson said. The speed up would lead to 1080p video at 120 frames per second, four times what's usually possible today, and "professional" quality 3D recording.

Imagination didn't say when mobile devices would start shipping with the new PowerVR hardware, but ST-Ericsson expected the A9600 to arrive as test samples sometime this year. The timing would imply mass production for other companies in or by 2012 and could lead to major PowerVR implementers, including Apple, getting major performance improvements in as little as a year.

In the interim, the company also hinted that its much nearer term PowerVR SGX543 and SGX544 would come sooner than expected. They should reach the first shipping products "within three months," it said.

Which these would be wasn't said, but LG's Optimus 3D will use one as part of its TI OMAP 4430 processor. Apple is also expected to use the SGX543MP2 for the next iPad and iPhone. [via Engadget]
