DoCoMo demos interactive “touchable” 3D display tech

updated 05:40 am EST, Thu February 17, 2011

Uses optical tracking and magnetic technology

Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo has used the World Mobile Congress to demo its Touchable 3D Display. The aim of the technology is to give users the sensation that they are "touching'" a 3D object that they are viewing. It uses a glasses-free display and a magnetic field to create a force feedback sensation in the accompanying stylus. This gives users a sensation as though they are touching the object.

The stylus is tracked by two cameras which measure its three dimensional position in relation to the screen. Based on the positioning of the pen, an electrical signal is sent to a coil located behind the display. This in turn triggers a magnetic force that is felt by the user, the result of a magnet embedded in the tip of the stylus.

The demo shows a cartoon chameleon trying to catch the user's pen with its tongue. If it "captures" the pen, the stylus will vibrate to the point that if it isn't being held tightly enough by the user that it will jump out of their hand.

DoCoMo has not detailed its plans for the technology. [via Pocket-lint]
