Tablet strategy to center on Android and Win 7
During today's Q4 fiscal earnings call, Dell revealed that the 10-inch "Dell Tablet/Slate Concept" it teased at CES 2011 is now officially known as the Dell Streak 10 and will come pre-loaded with the tablet optimized Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) OS. Launch specifics were not detailed although investors were advised that the new Android tablet will arrive later this year. Dell stated that its tablet strategy will revolve around only two OS's with Android and Windows 7 the preferred platforms. No indication was given that it might experiment with the Linux-based MeeGo mobile OS.
The new 10-inch Android tablet now joins Dell's 10-inch Windows 7 tablet, which is also slated for launch later this year. Dell plans on a marketing strategy that will promote the Android platform as the choice for consumers, while the Windows 7 tablet will be aimed at its enterprise market.
The conference call confirmed comments made in September by Dell's mainland China president Amit Midha that it would launch at least one 10-inch tablet within 6 to 12 months.
