Fujitsu rolls out first ever MeeGo-based netbook

updated 05:10 am EST, Mon February 14, 2011

MeeGo gets its first formal outing

Fujitsu has introduced the first ever MeeGo-based netbook. The first release of the MeeGo open-source Linux OS geared for netbooks was delivered in May 2010 as a developer-only platform. The release of the Fujistu LifeBook MH330 marks the first the time the OS has been made available to consumers pre-installed on a shipping netbook.

The OS is available for download from the MeeGo website and is compatible for use on any Intel Pine Trail-based netbook, however, the version installed on the LifeBook MH300 has been optimized with appropriate drivers. If installed on a Windows 7-based netbook, it is likely that while the OS will still boot and function normally, users will lose the use of the function keys. Fujitsu is reported to be working on a solution for installing the OS as an aftermarket upgrade for its currently shipping netbooks that were pre-installed with Windows 7 Starter.

The netbook is shipping in Asia for the equivalent of $380 with no news on US pricing or availability at this time.
