updated 05:50 am EST, Mon February 14, 2011

Launch follows high-profile Galaxy S II event

Following Samsung's massive event focusing on the Galaxy S II smartphone, the company has followed up with a new handset, the Wave 578, based on the Bada OS. The midrange device features Near Field Communication (NFC) connectivity for quick payments, or communication with transportation services and other supported systems.

Aside from NFC components, the handset provides a standard set of features including 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, QuickType input assistance, and multi-touch support. Users can also connect to Samsung's own app portal for games or other utilities.

The Wave 578 is expected to launch in May, with initial availability limited to France. The device will then ship to other European countries and select markets in the Middle East and Asia. The company has yet to announce pricing information or specific carriers.
