Samsung next-gen mobile chips to be called Exynos

updated 05:20 am EST, Fri February 11, 2011

Cortex-A9 dual-core, 1GHz, 5x graphics

The next generation of Samsung mobile chips is to be officially known as Exynos. Originally codenamed Orion, the new name reflects Samsung's "smart and green" philosophy deriving from the original Greek words smart (exypnos) and green (prasinos). "We are excited to introduce the brand name of Exynos for Samsung's application processor family. As consumers demand more from their mobile products, Samsung's Exynos chips will be the power inside enabling the coolest HD multi-media features with even longer battery life," said Seh-Woong Jeong, executive vice president of marketing.

The new dual-core ARM Cortex-A9-based Exynos chips are expected to feature heavily in Samsung's next generation of Galaxy S phones and its Galaxy Tab 2. They are expected to be similar in design and function to the next generation of A-series chips from Apple who use Samsung's semiconductor foundries to fabricate its in-house ARM-based variations.

Each of the two cores in the Exynos run a 1GHz and when matched with the Mali-400 GPU is capable of decoding video at 1080p at 30fps. Graphics performance is boosted by five times over Samsung's current ARM Cortex-A8 Hummingbird design, while the new processor can also simultaneously support two displays.
