Verizon iPhone 4 launches to modest lineups

updated 07:30 am EST, Thu February 10, 2011

Verizon iPhone gets mixed queues

Both Apple Stores and Verizon itself today marked the launch of the Verizon iPhone 4. Initial reports suggest mixed lines at both locations. Regardless of whether it's an Apple, Best Buy or Verizon store, some report very few in line, even at Apple's 5th Avenue flagship, where others are seeing significant queues. Staff have been on hand to guide launches where queues existed.

The modest turnout is roughly in step with past Verizon launches but may be affected both by Apple's own launch strategy. Many if not most existing Verizon customers already bought the phone through online reservations and led to the carrier's best-ever first day sales just by themselves. Early adopters have the option of getting the phone at Best Buy and Walmart today as well, where past launches have often removed one or both of these chains as options.

Timing is also likely to have guided many buyers' decisions. Apple's choice to launch at 7AM, mid-week in February has deterred some from standing in line in the cold. The knowledge that a CDMA iPhone 5 is likely to ship in four to five months' time is known to have stopped technology enthusiasts or more patient buyers from signing up.

Whatever the initial turnout, the sales have been enough that they triggered a slowdown in Motorola sales at Verizon as a significant number of customers held off on Android phones. An unusually large number of buyers are moving from the original Droid and the Droid X as well as BlackBerry devices, especially the touchscreen BlackBerry Storm.

    got mine

No wait for me. I pre-ordered mine last week and got it Monday... Works great so far. Excellent voice and data quality. I ran speed tests against my friends AT&T iPhone and I get almost twice the download and upload speeds. But keep in mind bandwidth will vary.

    Knowledge?

"...The knowledge that a CDMA iPhone 5 is likely to ship in four to five months'..." Surely, a journalist would have written the following: "...The belief that a CDMA iPhone is rumored to ship in four to five months..."

    Hmm...

Most of America isn't going to by a 8 month old phone. Bravo.

    are you sure?

Maybe they were lining up for other things.

Because it's hard to imagine why anyone would waste their time standing in line to get a cell phone they could order on the internet and have delivered to them.

And why should people line up to get into the NY store. Isn't that always open? Can't they just walk in? Or does Apple enforce some kind of "You've got to stand outside in line to get this" rule?

    Not a fan of VZ...

Not a fan of VZ, but anything that knocks sales away from android to iOS is fine with me, even if it isn't the huge response us att iPhone users are used to.

    Long Lines In China

I've been to China. It doesn't take much to create long lines there.

Why is everyone rating this as negative? he's dead on. it's not the latest and greatest. Its the same phone that has been out for 8 months. Its like waiting in line to see the premiere re-release of Avatar.

It's available for pre-order. It was the "must have" device.. last year. There is brand new one (most likely) coming out in 4 months. 3 main reasons why there is no line and little fanfare.

    Amusing

It's never good when your employee's out number your customers during a launch event.

And I wonder how many of those in line walked out with an Android Phone??

    HAHAHAHAHAHA!

And unusually large number compared to what? 2 Is 100% larger than 1!
