HP fights back with Veer, Pre3

HP unveils Veer and Pre3 at webOS event

HP as promised launched two new smartphones at its webOS event. The Veer is billed as one of the smallest smartphones ever and has the front surface area of a credit card; it tucks a slide-out keyboard underneath a 2.6-inch, 320x400 display. It still has an 800MHz processor fast enough to handle Flash and has HSPA+ 3G support for fast downloads on major networks.

The Pre3 is an upgrade to the Pre2 released just months ago and has a much sharper 3.6-inch, 480x800 display as well as a front camera for video chat. A 1.4GHz processor gives it another leap in performance, as do HSPA+ and (on CDMA carriers) EVDO Revision A. HP has taken design issues to heart and now has a new keyboard better for larger fingers.

All of the devices run webOS 2.1.

The Veer should be available in early spring and will be followed by the Pre3 in the summer. In the short term, Verizon will be carrying the Pre2 and should have it in stores effective tomorrow.

These ought to give the Windows Phlop 7 a run for its money. (Don't laugh - it's already beaten the Kin.)

    still haven't learned from Apple

Announce the product when you can actually SELL IT. Not when it's still months away from being available.

Nobody will remember these devices when they finally start shipping them.

    Odd naming convention

calling something the Pre 3 kind of hints the Pre 2 is obsolete.

Despite this, if you do learn something from Apple, its that you can have an iPhone 4 take the high end, and an iPhone 3gs as a budget phone.

The Pre 2, is just about to launch, within days, and they announce the Pre 3? Yes, my first reaction is they are somehow trying to blunt their own sales momentum, by pre-announcing the obsolescence of the Pre 2, before its even released.

But calm down, first reactions aren't always correct. The Pre 2 may be the budget phone, and the fact that its available immediately - is great, and in actuality it is a fine phone. I personally would wait for the Pre 3, but then again, I'd not want the budget phone.

    Interesting last paragraph

"The Veer should be available in early spring and will be followed by the Pre3 in the summer. In the short term, Verizon will be carrying the Pre2 and should have it in stores effective tomorrow."

nowwhatareyoulookingat made me look again to read that line. The *Pre2* is just now available tomorrow with these new devices being months away? Way to kill Pre2 sales, guys. Dang if I'd want to get locked into a multi-year contract when new hardware/software (and who knows if or when the Pre2 can run the newer OS) is due in months. Sheesh.

    In Spanish-speaking countries...

The Veer is going to be called the 'Beer'.

    Una cerveza, por favor.
