Broadcom chip has 1.1GHz ARM CPU, 1080p video

Broadcom on Wednesday introduced a new dual-core ARM Cortex A9 1.1GHz CPU that it's targeting at high-end mobile hardware. The system-on-chip BCM28150 uses the company's Merlyn app processor and the company's latest VideoCore IV mobile graphics, allowing for 1080p video playback as well as smooth 3D games at the same resolution. It will be used in Android devices and those that use other open-source operating systems.

The platform combines Broadcom's 40nm BCM28150 3G processor, the BCM2091 RF chip, and a BCM59056 power management unit. Its modem is a full HSPA+ part that can support 21Mbps 3G download speeds. The processor allows for HDMI output and can process cameras with up to 20-megapixel sensors. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and an FM radio are integrated into the platform.

A demo is expected next week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
