AT&T firmware guide shows Android 2.2 for the Captivate

AT&T set to release Android 2.2 for Captivate?

The Samsung Captivate may soon get the long-awaited software upgrade to Android 2.2 from its current 2.1, if an AT&T support page is any indication. The page explains how to check the phone for the latest firmware version, and the About Phone screen capture on the page shows Android 2.2 preloaded. The handset on the page is also running Samsung's TouchWiz skin for the OS.

Many owners are disappointed that the device is held back with the relatively old Android 2.1 software rather than the newer 2.2 that's available on handsets, and Android 2.3 appearing on some as well. Other Galaxy S phone users, mostly outside of the US but also using the Vibrant on T-Mobile, have already had their 2.2 updates. Samsung has insisted that it has wanted a smooth launch and needed to iron out technical issues, but it has kept the Captivate and most US phones on 2.1 for several months.

The Captivate sported high-end hardware specs when new, including a four-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen, a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and 16GB of built-in storage. Its five-megapixel camera can record 720p videos.
