Hackers begin jailbreaking Verizon iPhone

updated 05:00 pm EST, Mon February 7, 2011

Untethered Greenpois0n reaches Windows

Some people are already successfully jailbreaking the Verizon iPhone, according to reports. The Verizon device notably uses a proprietary version of iOS, 4.2.6, an upgrade from the current v4.2.1. It is also an extremely recent piece of hardware, as shipments to Verizon subscribers only began arriving this weekend.

None of the hacks are being publicly distributed yet, but it's believed that an upcoming version of Greenpois0n will add support. Its developers have meanwhile released an untethered Windows jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1, RC5. The Mac equivalent was introduced last week.

Also missing a public jailbreak is iOS 4.3, currently in its third developer beta. While it should bring the features of v4.2.6 to all iPhones, the unofficial iPhone Dev Team is likely holding off on a hack until a finished version of the firmware is available. Apple regularly attempts to close vulnerabilities that allow for jailbreaking or unlocking.

    Umm...

    iOS 4.2.1 isn't proprietary?

    News to me.

    Proprietary

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
