GMail 'Priority Inbox' feature now available for mobile

updated 07:45 pm EST, Mon February 7, 2011

Assigns importance to incoming e-mails

Mobile users struggling with managing large amounts of e-mail in the GMail inbox can now set up and utilize Priority Inbox, a service that automatically identifies important mail based on what users actually read and reply to (which Google keeps track of). Up until now, only desktop users and a handful of Android devices could use the service, but it is now available for almost all HTML5-compliant mobile web browsers, such as devices on Android 1.5 or higher or iOS 3 or higher.

Users must still use a desktop to initially set up Priority Inbox, but once set up they will see it on their mobile browsers when visiting GMail on the "Menu" screen. It can show visual indicators of whether a message is important and already read, or important but not already read. Important messages that users want to deal with later can simply be starred for future action, and users can fine-tune the importance algorithm manually.

The service is being rolled out today and does not require any extra charge.
